On February 14, 2013, at Westlake Center Park, between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. One Billion Rising Seattle 2/14/2013/Un Billion de Pie – Seattle will join with activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express our outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and rise in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
One Billion Rising began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women and girls on our planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION mothers, grandmothers, sisters, lovers and friends. This worldwide event is being coordinated by V-Day, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls, that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works. To date, the V-Day movement raised over $90 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it and received numerous acknowledgements including Worth Magazine’s 100 Best Charities, Marie Claire Magazine’s Top Ten Charities, one of the Top-Rated organizations on Philanthropedia/Guidestar and Great Nonprofits.
To make this a truly representative and global event, we are inviting all of the ethnic, cultural and religious communities in Seattle to join us in a celebration of song and dance supporting an end to violence against women and girls on a global scale. We would be delighted if your community could be part of our event. For example:
- Perform a cultural dance and/or teach a dance to participants (RSVP by 2/1/13 to schedule a time slot for your group)
- Reach out and invite members of your community to attend and participate
- Contact media sources that will reach your community and tell them about the event
- Donate to help us fund the event
- Host a table with information about the direct services or resources your group offers to victimized women
We want this to be a diverse, multi-cultural event, and we invite and welcome your involvement. For more information, please contact Penny Lara at 206.438.4073 or OneBillionRisingSeattle@gmail.com
