Last night over 75 Native youth, parents, community members, and allies attended the Rally@ SPS Board meeting. Community gathered for?’Native Heritage Month’ presentation and public testimony in support of merging Pinehurst ASI and Indian Heritage into? a new? ‘Native Heritage’ program. Native focused curricula, Native sports,?Native culture,?Historical and contemporary issues?relevant to Native people. Another goal was to highlight SPS Data on Native learners such as the widening the achievement gap, elimination of services, resources and support for Native learners.
The SPS Board voted approval (5-2) of the? new program ‘Native Heritage’
The ‘Native Heritage’ k-8?program will be a pathway for Indian Heritage H.S. program at Ingraham H.S. eventually?(2017) both programs will move to ‘Robert Eaglestaff’ school (wil/pac).
Thank-you to our ancestors,?all those who laid the ground work?past and present, and thank-you to the youth who?spoke so eloquently, respectfully, and ?intelligently?you all?made a powerful impact on the Board decision. This is obviously just the start,? a lot of work will need to go into holding SPS staff to our vision and to secure?appropriate funding to support the new program. Please let us know if you want to assist.
Also this?SPS Board decision does not absolve SPS of the current conditions our youth and family members are struggling with in trying to get an education. System is still broken, this is?a step forward but not a solution for those students at other schools experiencing daily?discrimination and oppression?due to cultural/racial and?various?abilities.
We are all in this together and as a?unified community we can accomplish much for our kids and our future.
